1. The Charlottetown Conference
was called to discuss a union of NS,
NB, PEI and possibly Newfoundland. They
asked if they could attend and make a presentation.
2. The Canadas saw many advantages to joining with the
Maritimes (protection, economic stability)
3. Agenda for the Quebec
Conference: Delegates drafted a list of 72 recommendations to take back to
their home governments .
The recommendations included:
the division of responsibilities and powers, the structure of government, and a
promise of a ferries and railroads for transportation
PEI Reaction: not supportive à Coles withdrew his support.
4. PEI was finally prospering,
and a unique identity was developing

PEI didn’t want to join
Confederation for three main reasons: political autonomy, taxation, trade and
econonmy.
The British wanted PEI to join Canada for defense
reasons, Dominion of Canada didn’t want the Island to be independent – wanted
common tarifs, defense, wanted to make Canada “whole”, also valued their
fisheries.
US: did not want PEI joining Confederation, they
talked about renewing the Reciprocity Treaty – talk of having 5. delegates from Ontario, Quebec, NB and NS travelled to England to
